The 2,440m2 blast resistant glazing roof of the Crossrail access at London’s famous Paddington Station was built from 2013 to 2018. It is located right next to the famous historic station complex. It was the largest renovation since Paddington Station was built in 1853.

The canopy attached directly to the station building is a spectacular steel and glass roof and another successful integration of modern steel and glass architecture into a historical environment from Waagner Biro steel and glass. The construction has a span of 17.4m and a total length of 120m.

The canopy glazing features an artwork by American artist Spencer Finch. He created the glass art called “Cloud Index”, which changes depending on the incidence of light and the position of the sun.

Since the project is located at one of the most important public transport hubs in London, extensive research and tests on the blast resistance of the steel structure and glazing had to be carried out in advance.
