The extension tower for the Bauhaus Archive / Museum for Design in Berlin was
a major challenge for Zeman & Co GmbH as the general contractor. Also involved
from the Zeman Group were Waagner Biro steel and glass and the factory for steel
structures Zekon.

The concept by Staab Architekten required optimizations in all areas – from the
steel and timber structure to the glass façade. The external, filigree load-bearing
structure was particularly demanding. Around 100 years ago, during the time of
Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius, the Tower would not have been feasible. Only
modern digital planning and precise production facilities made it possible to realize
the new centerpiece of the Bauhaus Archive.

The delicate appearance of the tower required significant expertise in its execution.
The external steel cage forms the outer wall panels of the tower, which are
connected by cross-laminated timber floors and beech wood beams to the inner
wooden core of the escape staircase. A special façade construction had to be developed
to absorb large deformations and protect the high composite glass panels
from damage. Zeman & Co utilised modern technologies and materials to create
an aesthetically pleasing and functional solution.

This project demonstrates Zeman & Co’s comprehensive expertise in complex
steel construction and and the perfect co-operation between the companies of the
Zeman Group.
