The renovation of the glass roof over the plenary hall of the Bavarian Parliament in
Munich was awarded in a competitive dialogue format, from which Waagner Biro
steel and glass emerged as the winner.
Since all construction work was taking place during ongoing operations of the state
parliament and in coordination with other simultaneous construction projects,
logistics and coordination with all project participants posed a particular challenge.
Following the detail design phase, in cooperation with the team of Werner Sobek
as the consulting engineers, the construction of the access scaffolding and the
installation of the overlying weather protection roof began. Thereafter, a custom
made intermediate protective ceiling was installed to protect the plenary hall and
its suspended glass ceiling during the renovation work.
After completion of this necessary preparatory work, the existing glass roof, including
the secondary steel structure, was dismantled. The primary steel construction
remaining on the building was ground and re-protected with new intumescent
paint. Followed by the installation of the new triple insulated printed glass panes
and completion with bespoke snow retention and fall protection systems. After the
last phase, the disassembling of all temporary measures, the new glass roof was
handed over to a satisfied client without any defects.
As part of a long-term maintenance contract, Waagner Biro steel and glass will
continue to contribute to the preseravation of the new roof for decades to come.
