The refurbishment of steel and glass roofs and facades, often simplistically referred to
as “glass replacement,” involves far more complexity than it appears. At WBSG, we
recognize the importance of understanding the existing structure, conducting thorough
examinations, and meticulously planning the integration of new requirements to ensure
adherence to project schedules and budgets.

Following our successful renovation of the plenary hall roof in Munich, we embarked
on another significant project under the preliminary planning of Werner Sobek AG. This
project involved the roof and facade upgrade of the atriums at the UKV office complex
in Saarbrücken. The scope included the removal and replacement of approximately
1,400 m² of glass, which consisted of 772 panes. These were replaced with new accessible
triple insulated glass panes featuring special coatings and printing.

The new glass panes provided significantly improved performance values but also
introduced additional weight. Integrating these new loads into the existing structure
required precise design, structural calculations, and the selection of appropriate
materials to support the additional weight.

Minimizing disruption to office operations during the construction phase was crucial. This
was achieved through the use of crash decks and temporary weather protection roofs.
Planning began in April 2023, and construction started in June 2023. The renovation of
the three atria and two connecting passages was completed within six months. The
existing steel structure was restored to excellent condition and received a new coat of
paint after thorough material compatibility testing.
